Nestled in southwest France, Bergerac is a hidden gem of the Dordogne Valley.  Lying at the heart of the Périgord Pourpre, it is one of the four regions that make up the historical and cultural region of Périgord.  The choice of purple colour represents the famous wines of the region, the production of which dates back to the Roman conquest.  It is a place where wine, history and countryside charm all come together.

The pace of life in Bergerac offers a slower rhythm and authentic charm, characterised by timber-framed houses, narrow cobbled streets, pretty fountains, market squares, and a vibrant riverside atmosphere along the Dordogne River.

Bastide Towns

Wander through beautifully preserved bastides like Eymet, Issigeac and Monpazier. These fortified towns, with their timber-framed houses, arcaded squares and lively markets, offer a timeless journey back to the 13th century. Stop at a local café for a coffee and watch village life unfold, or explore artisan shops nestled in centuries-old buildings.

 Dordogne River

Float along the Dordogne river in a canoe passing by historic villages, scenic cliffs, and quiet woodlands. It’s a relaxing way to see the countryside from a different angle, with plenty of opportunities to take in the natural beauty of the area at your own pace. For families or nature lovers, it’s also a great way to spot local wildlife and enjoy the outdoors.

Food & Wine

​​The local cuisines of Bergerac are a festival of flavours with dishes such as duck confit, foie gras, walnuts and truffles. Experience the gastronomic delights of French food, paired with high-quality wines such as the sweet Monbazillac rose or white or the Pécharmant red which perfectly complement the local delicacies.

Castles & Gardens

Bergerac is rich with historic castles (châteaux) Visit Château Monbazillac famous for its architecture and wine tastings or Château de Bridoire for fun interactive indoor and outdoor activities.  Nearby gardens worthy of a visit are Eden et Sens for its interactive, artistic and natural walking trails or Les Jardins Panoramiques de Limeuil that boasts 360 degree views of the Dordogne and Vézère rivers.

Markets & Festivals

The Dordogne region is famous for its vibrant open-air markets, often described as the beating heart of French village life.  Be taken on a sensory voyage with the aroma of freshly baked bread and the call of market vendors. You can chose from weekly outdoor markets, seasonal truffle markets, and summer night markets.  Alongside the markets Bergerac boasts a year round calendar of festivals such as jazz, dance, arts, medieval and of course wine tasting.

Bikes & Hikes

​

There are plenty of hiking and biking routes in and around Bergerac.  Explore the Chemin d’Amadour, part of a historic pilgrimage route which offers visitors a unique way to explore the region on foot, following age-old paths through forests, vineyards and peaceful hamlets.  For the biking enthusiasts you can choose between scenic river routes or vineyard cycling stopping off along the way to enjoy local attractions.

For the Kids

The Dordogne is not just a place that the adults can enjoy, there are plenty of activities to keep the little ones occupied in and around Bergerac too.  Whether it is Bowling at Bowling Bergeracois, Go Karting at Bergerac Karting, Trampolining and Laser Tag at Laser Play, Badminton, Padel, Horse Riding or Quad Biking around the vineyards, you will find something that everyone in the family loves.
